Sod Lawn

Fairy rings are raised green spots in Arizona sod lawns that take the shape of a circle. Growing steadily every year, some fairy rings can diameters of three or more meters. In mythical folklore, fairy rings were the result of fairies coming out of the woods at night and dancing in circles in the grass. While a cute story, it sure doesn’t explain much. Luckily, science has come up with explanations for why these strange rings occur.

It seems that certain species of underground fungus account for the fairy rings. As the fungus grows underground, it consumes various types of organic matter. However, it leaves behind protein and a plant hormone known as gibberellins which lead to fast and lush growth. Because these areas are essentially better fertilized, you get a bright green ring with surrounding sod grass that isn’t quite as bright. Part of the problem with the fungus growth is that it leaves behind mycelium (the ‘root structure’ of the fungus) covering the grass roots that is somewhat hydrophobic. This can make it so the soil has a tough time absorbing water and can leave the grass withered in the center. Some fungus also burns through a significant amount of Nitrogen which is an essential nutrient for the Arizona grass. Without enough nitrogen, the surrounding grass ends up withered as well.

Solving this vexing problem in your sod is probably easier than it seems. There are many home remedies that you should, however, avoid. These include throwing boiling water or vinegar on the ring. If anything, these solutions will make things worse.

sod lawn grass

If the Arizona sod grass is healthy and growing (not stressed from the seasons), one of the best things you can do is just throw some nitrogen fertilizer on it. This will mask the green ring by making the surrounding grass just as green. You can also take a close tine pitch fork and poke holes around the ring to allow it to accept water. You can then use a wetting agent to get the ground to soak up the water, or you can make your own by mixing one tablespoon of liquid detergent with every five gallons of water.

If none of these solutions bring back your sod lawn, you might want to engage the services of someone who can apply a fungicide like Prostar (flutolanil).

Lawn Organic Fertilizers

Taking care of your grass is not every body’s cup of tea. It requires lot of hard work and commitment. Organic lawn fertilizer helps to keep the grass cleaner and safer for human beings. These fertilizers have brought several new options for homeowners who want to have both green and safer lawns.

These fertilizers are slow releasing which means that they release their nutrients slowly. In this way it helps grass grow in a proper manner. As the nutrients slowly release into the soil, the roots soak them up and the result is an even carpet of grass. This is also an effective way to control the growth of weeds and they will not get any place to grow.
organic fertilizer for lawns                 lawn fertilizer
Soil organisms of Earth are essential for the growth of plants and equally important for grass as well. Without these soil organisms the nutrients of the Earth are of no use for the plants. Only Earth organisms break into nitrates essential elements that are very essential for the grass to grow properly. Besides this, it also protects plants from several diseases and also provides carbon dioxide for the photosynthesis process.

In today’s era, human beings are suffering from the natural imbalance just because of continuous use of chemicals as fertilizers. In order to maintain this balance between organic fertilizers are best suitable. Basically, this type of fertilizer is extracted from natural origins and does not have any type of chemical that could provide harm to the surface of the earth. In fact it does not suppress grass from growing as any other chemical substances do. However, it is not only responsible for growing grass but also helps them stay vibrant and healthy.

There are several other benefits of this fertilizer; here is the list of all those benefits:

Safe for the Human Beings

The basic and the best advantage of this type of fertilizer is that it is absolutely safe for your family and animals. So, if you are unable to stop your family members or animals to play in your lawn, this organic fertilizer if the best suitable for you to keep your child and animals out of any chemical danger, it is totally natural.

It is Bio Degradable

Scientifically, the chemical fertilizers are non- bio-degradable that are affecting the surface of the Earth in very unnatural ways. Approximately every naturally occurring resource on this Earth has the capability to break down and return value to the environment. On the other hand, manmade chemicals are very hard to dissolve in the soil and usually more strong for the soil nutrients. Every man made chemical fertilizer contains several compounds that are not only originally poisonous bit also divided into multiple poisonous substances. However, organic fertilizers are totally, bio- degradable. This not only dissolves into the soil easily but also has more than double effectiveness than the chemical counterparts.

Less Wastage

It is a tendency of chemical fertilizers to kill everything that comes in contact with them like unwanted ants, dandelions. Additionally, they also kill several helpful organisms like earthworms, bees, and beneficial micro organisms. This could affect the health of the plants and grass in your lawn.

So, organic lawn fertilizer is very good for your garden.

Lawn Fertilizing

Sustainment programs should be prepared for trees and shrubs on your landscape. A dependable sustainment plan includes checking and containing insect and disease problems, restraining weed competition, and doing timely applications of water, mulch, and fertilizer.

Tree and bush fertilization is particularly crucial in urban and suburban areas of the country where soils have been changed due to building. These urban lands incline to be heavily compressed, poorly oxygenated, poorly drained, and short of organic matter. Even where soils haven’t been stricken, fertilization is possibly needed as part of a sustainment program to step-up plant vigor or to improve root or crest growth.

Trees and shrubs in residential and commercial landscape plantings are frequently fertilized to keep them healthy and attractive. Over-fertilization is prevalent, causing excessive growth, especially on young nursery stock. Trees growing in lawn areas usually receive some nutrients when the grass is fertilized. This is usually sufficient to maintain most trees in fertile soil. However, fertilization may be desirable on altered soils where unconsolidated fill material has been added or the topsoil has been removed. Managed urban areas where fallen leaves are taken off may also require a fertilization regime to enrich soil and replenish nutrients.

Plant nutrition is no stand-in for environmental factors, such as sunshine and water, which must be in equilibrium if a tree or bush is to acquire its full potential. Trees or bushes that are healthy and flourishing are more insusceptible to assault by insects and diseases. An application of fertilizer might, in a few cases, improve the plant’s resistance to additional infestations of certain pests. For instance, maple trees will recoup from mild cases of Verticillium wilt after applications of nitrogen fertilizer.

Fertilizer Objectives

How and when to fertilize landscape trees and bushes hinge upon:
Sustainment aims (induce new vs. maintain existing growth)
Tree and bush ages (in general more for newer and less for older plants)
Plant strain levels

When to Fertilize

The best time to fertilize trees goes from late autumn, after the leaves have come down, through the winter and into early spring before new growth comes about. Fertilizer employed in the autumn has a lengthier period of time to infiltrate the soil enabling the roots to more efficiently assimilate it. The fertilizer is soaked up by the roots during the winter and is accessible to the plant for growth in the spring.
Trees that are rapidly developing should be fertilized annually. Well-established, adult trees usually call for fertilizer once every three to four years.

Newly Planted Trees Fertilizer Use

Newly planted trees usually do not need fertilizer during the first growing season. Most transplanted trees developed in the nursery have high levels of nutrients that last through the first growing season. Too much fertilization during the first year can damage the tree and reduce its rate of growth. After the first year, nitrogen can be applied in an approximately 3ft area around each tree. This will ensure a sufficient supply for continued growth. Do not apply fertilizer within 12 inches of the stem of the tree because fertilizer can burn and harm young stem tissue.

liquid fertilizer

Determining the Need to Fertilize

Visual inspection of trees and shrubs is often the best overall factor to use in making fertilization decisions.
Look for:
Poor leaf color (pale green to yellow)
Reduced leaf size and retention
Premature fall coloration and leaf drop

Soil Test

18 nutrients are required by plants: carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassiu , calcium , magnesium, sulfur and 9 trace minerals: iron, boron, copper, manganese, molybdenum, zinc, cobalt , nickel and chlorine. Carbon , oxygen and hydrogen operate in the formation of plant cells and food fabrication, the first two furnished from the atmosphere and the latter received from water soaked up by roots.

A soil test furnishes specialised data on the potential for plant reaction to agricultural limestone and to phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. In addition it provides a verifiable basis for ascertaining how much of those elements to add once they are found to be lacking. A representative soil sampling can be a challenge to get, because most nutrient-absorbing roots of trees and bushes are in the upper six inches of the soil and may stretch out two or three times beyond the radius of the crown. Consequently, in determining the nutritional demands of trees and shrubs, it’s also essential to look at soil and moisture conditions; the species, age and vigor of the plants; and previous fertilization.

Nitrogen, the most typically depleted soil nutrient, furnishes the greatest growth response. Unfortunately, soil tests or analyses for accessible nitrogen are not very dependable. Nitrogen is present in different forms (e.g. nitrate, ammonium, urea) and these forms can alter rapidly in the soil. All the same, overall tree growth, especially root and shoot elongation, leaf color and leaf size, can be heightened with increases of nitrogen. Be sure not to overfertilize with nitrogen. Don’t overcompensate with greater amounts of nitrogen when fertilizing grass, bushes and trees. Nitrate leaches readily from numerous soils and can create water pollution problems.

Selecting a Fertilizer

A variety of fertilizer types exist:
Complete (N-P-K) vs. incomplete (one or more select nutrients)
Organic vs. inorganic
Fast release vs. slow release
Dry (granulated, pelletized, spikes, pulverized encapsulated) vs. liquid

To help determine the type of fertilizer to apply, consider the following: type of plant, time of year, desired rate of plant reaction, application methods and equipment cost, proximity to water sources, effect of soil type and pH, type of deficiency, and results of a soil test or other sampling method.

Nearly all landscape plants profit from a slow secreting nitrogen fertilizer that can be organic or inorganic. Remember that nitrogen is easily washed through the soil, but phosphorus and potassium are not, signifying they necessitate less frequent application.

Methods of Application

Fertilizers may be put on either directly or indirectly for plants. When sod is fertilized, tree and bush roots that stretch into the sod area absorb some of the fertilizer, and are consequently indirectly fertilized. Sod fertilization rates should be supplemented only if trees and bushes are demonstrating symptoms of nutritive deficiency.

Direct application of fertilizer may involve incorporation into the backfill soil or placement in the planting hole at planting time. However, the most common form of direct fertilizer application, broadcasting, is generally the most effective, especially relative to cost. Simply placing the desired fertilizer over the soil atop the tree and shrub roots and watering it in is usually adequate. Compacted soil should first be aerated or raked.

The most serviceable and expeditious way to fertilize sizeable trees is to disseminate granular fertilizer on the surface of the dirt and permit rain or irrigation water to move the nutrients down to the roots. Uniformly disperse the fertilizer over the area to be fertilized - that expanse covering the outer two-thirds of the distance between the tree trunk and the drip line and extending at least 50 percent of the crown radius beyond the dripline.

Another method is to put granular fertilizer into holes in the soil that are 4 to 12 inches deep. These holes are dug in a regular pattern at 2- to 3-foot intervalsl, in the same area as broadcast fertilizer is applied. Divide up the fertilizer among the holes. This technique does not insure consistent coverage to all feeder rootsl, especially in the upper few inches of the soil surface where the majority of the roots occur. High concentrations of fertilizers in these holes can also injure roots located bordering the hole.

A commonly used commercial method is to inject  into the soil. A special injection rod is used and the fertilizer solution is injected under pressure. A comparable probe mechanism called a ‘root feeder’ is sold at most garden centers. The long probe attaches to a garden hose and water-soluble fertilizer cartridges distribute nutrients and water directly into the tree root zone. The tip of the injection needle should be inserted 4 to 12 inches into the soil at 2- to 3-foot intervals. Fertilizers suitable for liquid injection are typically more expensive per unit of nutrient and are frequently more difficult to apply than granular fertilizers.

Spikes are additional choice for tree or bush fertilization. These are rammed into the soil with a heavy hammer and can only be employed effectively when the soil is damp. The spikes don’t evenly broadcast fertilizer around the tree’s or bush’s major feeder roots. Tree spikes are a pricey choice. Their popularity is founded on simplicity and ease of application.

Foliar feeding is a quick-fix solution when a nutrient deficiency has been found. The leavesl, buds and green wood are capable of a little nutrient absorption. Foliar nutrient sprays are applied with a pressure sprayer or siphon sprayer attached to a garden hose. The greening from foliar spraying is fairly quick but not long lasting. More often than not deficiencies of micronutrients including ironl, boron or manganese are corrected by seasonal foliar applications.

Micro-injection is the straight injection of essential nutrients into the trunk of the tree or shrub. It is a customary commercial practice for relieving or invigorating trees showing stress or decline symptoms. Nutrients can also be placed in gelatin capsules and set in in holes in the tree trunk. Micro-injection research is relatively limited and results are often conflicting. Drilling holes, implanting or injecting fertilizer and sealing holes can lead to trunk disfiguration and decay. Foliar applications, injections or implants should only be considered when soil application of fertilizer is not viable. These measures are considered short-term cures for nutrient deficiencies and pest infestations. Ultimately, the proper soil and foliar applications must be engaged for a long-term cure.

Placement of Fertilizer

Fertilizer shouldn’t be focused around the base or trunk of a tree or bush, but should be put on as much of the plant’s root zone as feasible. For trees and bushes, fertilizer ought to be put on an area double the crown spread. Because most landscape plant roots grow in the top foot of soil, shallow, not deep application, is suggested.

Factors Affecting Fertilizer Uptake

Many factors affect how well and well trees and shrubs absorb fertilizers. The most important uptake factors are:
Fertilizer form (inorganic, fast release, or liquid forms are absorbed faster than organic, slow-release,or dry forms)
Soil type (clay particles and organic matter soak up or bind more nutrients than sand, so fertilizer application needs to be more often in sandy soils, but with lower rates each time due to leaching potential)
Soil moisture content and soil warmth (nutrient uptake is faster in moist warm soils)
Plant vitality (plants under stress are less able to take up available nutrients due to damaged or reduced root systems)

Timing of Application

Fertilizer should be utilized when plants require it, when it will be most efficacious, and when plants can readily accept it. Late summertime and early autumn fertilization may hasten new growth that is not winter hardy, and summer drought could interfere with nutritive uptake, but spring, fall, and wintertime applications are satisfactory. A split application might be advantageous, applying half the annual rate in early spring and the balance in the fall as or after plants go dormant.
If water is unavailable, don’t fertilize altogether - plants will be unable to assimilate the nutrients. (During a dry time of year, fertigation - application of fertilizer by means of an irrigation system can be beneficial.)

Tree and bush fertilization comprises only one part of aggregate plant maintenance. Fertilization might not benefit a plant if it’s under stress from inadequate soil aeration or drainage, sodden soil, deficient light or space, or excessive pest problems. Altogether factors determining plant growth should be kept at optimal levels to guarantee plant vigor.

Organic Fertilizer

Once a specialty product purchased by a select few farmers and hobby gardeners, organic fertilizers have now become a common sight in virtually every garden center. With so much competition on the market, organic fertilizer manufacturers and dealers are looking at new ways to market their products and increase their sales.

Like all wise marketers, organic fertilizer distributors have learned that the best way to sell their product by combining loads of information with interesting displays and well-planned advertising campaigns. Cross-merchandising and educational marketing are two of the best sales strategies any organic fertilizer manufacturer can put into play.

Many organic fertilizer shops and garden centers rely on product displays to increase their sales bracket. The strategy in play consists of catching the consumer’s attention by placing entire product lines in one expansive display. Other suppliers will scatter displays throughout the store to increase product presence and encourage people to buy. Another popular sales strategy is the careful placement of organic fertilizer products amid the plant department. For example, you might see a potted rosebush with a small display of organic fertilizers next to it. In doing so, the shopkeeper indicates that the fertilizer will indeed encourage flowers to bloom.

organic fertilizers

Organic fertilizers are typically differentiated by their N-P-K formulations. A variance in these formulations helps to determine the specific area of use the product is most suited, whether it be fruits and vegetables, flowers, lawn care or turf grass. For example, organic fertilizers with N-P-K formulations of 6-2-2 carry a high Nitrogen content, and are best suited for lawn grass. By advertising this fact, organic fertilizer dealers are able to educate their customers and ultimately increase their bottom line.

The colours and packaging materials used can also be used to create a good sales strategy. More and more organic fertilizer manufacturers have repackaged their products, choosing to use plastic instead of brown paper in an effort to improve their sales. Organic fertilizers wrapped in bright resealable plastic bags and plastic containers are certainly much more attractive, and catch the attention of more shoppers. Sharp, eye-catching floral photography on organic fertilizer bags will also attract consumers, luring them with the notion that their flowers will look every bit as beautiful if they use this particular product.

Another important part of the marketing plan is advertising. With a successful ad campaign in magazines, newspapers, radio or television, the supplier can increase sales, and the manufacturer can increase productivity. Also important in the advertising process is consumer education. Telling potential buyers what the product is, and how it is used, will also help to increase sales. Consumers generally prefer not to purchase products that they have little or no knowledge about. Organic fertilizer producers and marketers are advised to offer informative packaging, giving shoppers the chance to learn more before they buy.

In 2002, many organic fertilizer manufacturers reported an increase in their sales. For example, the Scott’s Company reported a twenty percent increase in retail sales of its organic fertilizers and lawn plant food products. According to vice-president of lawn marketing Gordon Hecker, the Scott’s Company was able to achieve this boost in sales without making any changes to their organic fertilizers products. The increase came about due to marketing strategy and improved in-store material display.

Green Light is another organic fertilizer manufacturer that experienced double-digit increases in their sales. The company, based in San Antonio, Texas, has concentrated on marketing their specialty organic fertilizers and plant foods with all-weather displays and plastic packaging.

The trick to making a profit in organic fertilizer sales is really no trick at all. Just apply the basic rules or marketing, and watch your sales grow.

Garden Pest Control

Gardening can be great fun and good exercise. You can also reduce your grocery bill as a result of gardening, but if you don’t address a few issues you may find that you are feeding the pests rather than your family.

       Gardening             garden pest control
One of the most important issues when gardening is pest control, no matter if your garden is floral or vegetable. Pests can take over your garden and instead of working on something that you want to be pleasing to the eye or palate you will have an eyesore.

A gardeners best friend is his or her spay can, knap sack and the pest control section of his or her supermarket. Gardening is excellent exercise and can be hard work, so why spend all of that time having it turn into unproductive time just because of garden pests.

     garden pest control             garden pest
To help your garden stand out and be noticed you should not only care for the garden but for the lawn that surrounds it as well. The frame of a painting makes the painting look so much better.

Lawn grubs need to be controlled, not only will they damage your lawn but will eventually spread to your garden. Beetle grubs especially will turn your lawn into a dust bowl, but before you reach for a highly toxic poison try making your own environmentally friendly pesticide.

I have known too many people complain about the pests getting into their garden, and then going to the nursery or hardware store to buy something that will not only kill the snails or beetles but everything else that enters the garden, including, in extreme cases, themselves.

Get your lawn and garden to a nice healthy state before you worry about the pests, some pests will go away once the garden is healthy. But don’t kill it with kindness, too much water, too much fertilizer and cutting the grass too short can do more harm than good.

An over abundance of water will attract slugs. Slugs can eat more of your vegetable garden that you will end up putting on your table. An excellent product to use to get rid of slugs is Scotts EcoSense ferric phosphate, one of the few pesticides still used in Toronto, Canada.

I hope that I have made it abundantly clear that if you want to reap the benefits of all of your hard work in the garden you have to minimize the damage that the pests can cause. In order to defeat your enemy in the garden you must get to know them.

Organic Lawn Fertilizer

To make sure your lawn fertilizer is environmentally friendly, check to see that it achieves the standards of the EPA and OSB (National Organic Standards Board) guidelines for environmentally friendly garden care products.

About Organic Lawn fertilizers
If you’re looking for pet friendly lawn fertilizers, most organic lawn fertilizers that are certified by the EPA pose no risk to your pets. You can also talk to your veterinarian or local extension agent for other recommendations.

Most organic lawn fertilizers are designed to build up the soil itself, whereas artificial fertilizers may not do much to help create healthier soil. Also, look for organic lawn fertilizers that help stimulate the presence of beneficial soil organisms. These critters that live in the soil can actually help break down some elements of the lawn fertilizer and increase their efficiency. If you have healthy soil with lots of organic material mixed and a high number of soil organisms, your grass will naturally be able to fight diseases, pathogenic nematodes, and the pests that may attack your lawn.

Most organic lawn fertilizers are also designed to be more efficiently absorbed than synthetic fertilizers. This is especially true of liquid organic lawn fertilizers. This means that excess nutrients are less likely to find their way into local water supplies and contaminate the water.

Environmentally friendly lawn fertilizers generally come in two forms, dry organic fertilizers and liquid organic fertilizers. Dry organic lawn fertilizers will typically stay on the lawn longer and therefore require fewer treatments. However, you will need some sort of spreader to distribute them over your lawn. Therefore, they are harder to use on irregularly shaped lawns. Dry organic lawn fertilizers may contain such natural ingredients as blood meal, alfalfa, corn gluten meal, and feather meal.

Liquid organic lawn fertilizers are absorbed almost instantly by your grass. This makes them useful for a quick greening of your grass. Products like HastaGro liquid organic fertilizer are intended as foliar treatments. This means that nutrients are absorbed quickly and effectively through the leaves. An added advantage of liquid fertilizers is that they slowly release nitrogen, meaning they’re very unlikely to burn your lawn.

Using Dry Organic Lawn Fertilizers
Dry organic fertilizers are useful for covering large areas. To use them, you will need some kind of spreader. Otherwise, you risk not having your dry fertilizer distributed out evenly over the lawn. Keep in mind that dry fertilizers are difficult to use on irregularly shaped lawns.

Spreaders are available in either drop or broadcast spreaders. Drop spreaders drop the fertilizer directly below the spreader. They are economical and good for smaller spaces.Broadcast spreaders actually shoot the fertilizer beyond the spreader over a large area. If you have a large lawn, you’ll probably want to use a broadcast spreader.

Using Liquid Organic Lawn Fertilizers
Liquid lawn fertilizers are generally very easy to use. You simply attach the liquid fertilizer to a common garden hose. The easy application of a liquid organic lawn fertilizer makes them ideal for fertilizing irregular spaces. Remember to read the application instruction for your liquid lawn fertilizer very carefully before you use it.

In addition to organic lawn fertilizers, you can use several different natural lawn care techniques to take care of your lawn. For example:

Test your soil frequently to determine what it needs.
Keep your clippings on your lawn. This is known as ‘grass-cycling’ and will help keep nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium in the soil. A reel mower is ideal for keeping grass clippings where they should be, on your lawn. If you keep your grass clippings on your lawn, you can reduce the use of liquid organic fertilizers to about four times a growing season.

Avoid fertilizing if you’re expecting rain. The fertilizer may simply wash off and will not do your lawn any good.

Organic Lawn Care

An organic approach to landscape design and gardening is in order due to habitat fragmentation and newly built subdivisions and roads throughout the country. Organic landscaping and gardening is no longer a fad.

A diverse landscape containing many species of plants not only supports an abundance of wildlife, it is also less prone to large scale devastation from insect pests or diseases.

Not only should you consider native plant types to your area, but you should also carefully cultivate a healthy soil that has a balance of mineral nutrients. Good, healthy soil produces strong plants which are better able to withstand plant diseases and insect damage. You’ll also need to fertilize and water consistently, taking care to use organic mulch and compost.

This article is intended as an introduction to organic lawn fertilization techniques, so that you can start taking care of your lawn in a more environmentally friendly manner. Using organic lawn fertilizers and organic lawn fertilizing techniques will ensure that you have a properly fertilized lawn that is healthy for your family, pets, and neighbors.

Organic lawn fertilizers are becoming more popular these days due to an increasing awareness that synthetic lawn fertilizers can negatively impact the environment and the health of our families, neighbors, and pets, especially if they are not used properly. Additionally, many artificial lawn fertilizers don’t really do anything to improve the long term health of the soil. In fact, many of the strong chemicals in artificial lawn fertilizers can degrade the soil and kill off beneficial soil organisms. This means that you’ll need to apply even more chemicals just to keep your grass alive.

Moreover, a recent study concluded that natural and organic lawn fertilizers are actually superior to synthetic fertilizers in terms of producing attractive, healthy lawns and for eliminating possible contaminants that can reach groundwater sources.

Before You Use an Organic Lawn Fertilizer
Before you begin shopping for organic lawn fertilizers, make sure to test your soil to get a sense of nutrient levels. You’ll want to test for nitrogen, phosphorous and potash levels. An environmentally friendly soil tester will provide you with reliable information on how healthy your soil is and if it lacks organic material. Getting to know your soil with a soil test will take the guess work out of lawn care.

Getting to know your soil is an important factor in knowing how to fertilize your lawn. Adding compost to your garden soil may be an important first step to get your grass to grow healthier. You can actually add compost directly onto your grass. Spread out the compost evenly over your lawn and work it in lightly with rake. You’ll want to keep the compost from being in contact with the grass blades for too long. After you’ve working in the compost, water your lawn to allow the compost to soak into the soil.

Also, try aerating your grass to get it to grow better. If you have good quality soil that is properly aerated, you may not need many organic lawn fertilizer treatments during the growing season.

Garden Fertilizer

The secret to making your flowering trees, shrubs, annuals, and perennials bloom more is in the numbers. All fertilizers have analysis numbers on the package. These numbers represent the percentage of each chemical the fertilizer contains.

For example, 12-12-12 is a typical garden fertilizer that would contain 12% nitrogen, 12% phosphorus, and 12% potassium. The quick explanation is; nitrogen produces vegetative or top growth, phosphorus produces flower buds, fruit, and root development, while potassium builds strong healthy plants.

Most lawn grasses are vigorous growers and therefore require significantly more nitrogen than the other plants in your yard. A lawn fertilizer would have an analysis of 26-3-3, indicating a fertilizer high in nitrogen. You would not want to use a fertilizer containing such a high percentage of nitrogen on landscape plants because it would be very easy to burn them. You must also keep in mind that many lawn fertilizers contain broadleaf weed killers, and most ornamental plants have broad leaves. The fertilizer doesn’t know the difference, and it will damage or kill ornamental trees and shrubs.

During the summer months the growth rate of most plants slows down, and when plants are not actively growing, they need very little nitrogen. Although not vigorously putting on new growth, many plants such as Dogwood Trees, Rhododendrons, and Azaleas are quietly working to produce flower buds for next year. Annual and perennial flowers are also busy making new flower buds.

To encourage flower bud production you can apply a fertilizer that contains a small percentage of nitrogen, a higher percentage of phosphorous, and a little potassium. I recently purchased a liquid fertilizer with an analysis of 5-30-5, ideal for flower production. Because the product is sold as a bloom producer, the manufacture also added a little chelated iron, manganese, and zinc, all good for your plants as well.

Most garden centers and discount stores carry similar products. I chose a liquid fertilizer because liquid fertilizers are absorbed both through the roots and systemically through the foliage, so they work quicker. I used a sprayer that attaches to the end of the garden hose to apply the fertilizer, but do not use the same hose end sprayer that you use for lawn fertilizers. There could be residual weed killer still in the sprayer.

About those hose end sprayers. I purchased one that is supposed to automatically mix the proper ratio for you. I used it to apply a general insecticide, and it worked, but it sure seemed like I went through a lot more insecticide than I needed. When I used it for the fertilizer the screen on the little pick up hose inside the jar kept getting clogged with the tiny solids in the fertilizer. I recommend using a solution of one part liquid fertilizer to one part water in the sprayer jar, and applying at a heavier rate.

Watch the liquid in the sprayer jar, and if it isn’t going down remove the lid and clean the little screen by spraying it with water from the garden hose. Read the application instructions on the container to determine how much fertilizer to apply, and how often. A fertilizer high in phosphorous will increase flower production. You will see a difference. Remember the golden rule of applying fertilizers. "Not enough is always better than too much."
